In Vedic astrology, Rashi or Janma Rashi usually means the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the exact moment of birth. It is also called Chandra Rashi. This is different from the Western Sun-sign convention and from Lagna or Ascendant.
The Moon moves through the zodiac quickly, changing signs roughly every two to three days. Exact time and place are therefore useful, especially when the Moon is close to a Rashi boundary. This calculator uses the Lahiri / Chitrapaksha sidereal zodiac and shows both the exact Moon degree and the approximate sign-entry and sign-exit times.

No. A Vedic Moon sign is based on the Moon's sidereal position at birth. A Sun sign is based on the Sun and is the sign most commonly used in Western newspaper horoscopes.
Usually not, because the Moon remains in one sign for roughly two to three days. But if your birth occurred close to a sign boundary, even a few hours can matter. The sensitivity section above checks this directly.
Differences can come from the chosen ayanamsha, birth-time or timezone errors, or whether the website uses tropical versus sidereal positions. This calculator uses Lahiri / Chitrapaksha sidereal positions.
